Google Merchant Center website verification: “Online store URL not verified” fixed
Before your products can appear on Google, Merchant Center needs to know the website is yours. That’s two steps: verify (prove you own or control the site) and claim (link it to this Merchant Center account). If either fails, you’ll see “Online store URL not verified”.
The five verification methods
Google lets you verify using:
| Method | Use it if |
|---|---|
| Your e-commerce platform | Your store runs on a platform like Shopify — it may have its own suggested option |
| You can access an email address that’s on the website’s domain or listed on the website | |
| HTML tag or file | You can add code to your homepage, or upload a file to the site’s server |
| Google Tag Manager | You’re an account-level administrator in Tag Manager |
| Google Analytics | You’re an admin of an Analytics account already linked to the site |
On Shopify, use the HTML tag. Google says the Analytics method might not work on third-party platforms like Shopify and recommends the HTML tag instead.
Sometimes verification happens automatically — for example, if a user on the account is already a verified owner in Search Console, or Google already has what it needs through Analytics. Then you go straight to claiming.
How to start (or retry) verification
In Merchant Center, go to Settings → Business info → Edit online store, enter the URL starting with http:// or https://, and select Continue. Use a domain you own and maintain.
Why verification or claiming fails — and the fix
- “Claimed at a higher level.” Another Merchant Center account has claimed a broader address. For example, you can’t claim
shop.example.comif another account has claimedexample.com. Often it’s an old account, one an agency created, or a duplicate. Try claiming the higher-level domain (e.g.example.cominstead ofwww.example.com), and check Search Console for other verified owners. - The tag is in the wrong place or was changed. An HTML tag must be inside the
<head>of your homepage, before<body>, and unchanged. - Different people in different tools. If your Search Console owner, or the Analytics user, isn’t also a user in Merchant Center, verification won’t link up — add the same person to both.
- The confirmation email didn’t arrive. Check spam, social, promotions folders. If nothing arrives after 3 minutes, resend the code. Copy and paste the code into Merchant Center — clicking the link in the email doesn’t fill it in.
- “www” or “https” problems. Google suggests trying without “www”, or removing the “s” from “https”, if verification keeps failing.
Several stores or countries?
One URL can only be claimed by one account. If you run separate stores for different countries, or several Shopify stores, Google recommends a Multi-Client Account (MCA), where sub-accounts inherit the parent’s claim.
Once the store is verified, check each product’s status — see Google Merchant Center product status. If Google flags the site itself, see Google Merchant Center misrepresentation.
