Mercari returns for sellers: when you have to accept a return
Mercari isn’t a “no questions asked” marketplace. A buyer only gets a mandatory return for a few reasons, inside a short window — everything else is up to you. Here’s the policy from the seller’s side.
The 72-hour window
Mercari automatically rates a transaction within 72 hours of carrier-confirmed delivery, which completes the order and releases your payment. To get a return, the buyer must request it through the Order Status page or the Rating page, before the order is completed. That pauses the transaction.
- Requests made anywhere else don’t pause the order and may not be reviewed.
- After an order is completed, returns and refunds aren’t allowed.
When you must accept a return
Within 72 hours of delivery, Mercari considers a return if the item:
- is significantly not as described in the listing;
- was damaged during shipping;
- is inauthentic or counterfeit.
Minor handling or storage wear, small scratches or dents on packaging, and cosmetic imperfections that don’t affect function are usually not grounds for a return.
When it’s your choice
You may — but don’t have to — accept a return when, for example:
- the item doesn’t fit;
- it smells (Mercari says buyers should ask about smoke or pets before buying);
- the buyer changed their mind;
- shipping was delayed by the carrier or weather;
- it’s plants, cuttings or seeds;
- it’s a lot or bundle without an itemized list or photos.
Some items are typically non-returnable for hygiene — swimwear, lingerie, undergarments, opened beauty products, earrings. Returned items must be unworn, unwashed, unmodified, with original tags.
If you decide not to accept an optional return, a polite reply:
How an approved return works
- Up to 50 lb: Mercari gives the buyer a prepaid return label.
- Over 50 lb (actual or dimensional weight, whichever is greater): you provide the label. If you don’t within 3 business days, the transaction is canceled.
- The buyer must drop it off within 72 hours of getting the label, with a first scan within 168 hours of approval. Otherwise the return may be voided and your payment released.
- The buyer’s refund is processed within 14 calendar days after the return reaches you.
- For small amounts, Mercari may give the buyer an account credit instead — and the buyer may not have to send the item back.
Keep your account address valid: returns are treated as complete if the package is refused or the address is insufficient.
If the return arrives damaged
Contact Mercari within 24 hours of receiving it (by the carrier’s timestamp) and before the transaction is canceled — through the Order Status page or the Help Center — and send any requested photos within 24 hours. Mercari decides, and can refuse the buyer’s refund.
Protect yourself before you ship
- Describe flaws clearly and photograph them — “significantly not as described” is the main return reason.
- Pack well; Mercari asks buyers for photos of the label and packaging when they claim shipping damage.
- Abuse of the return process, by either side, can lead to account restrictions.
For bundles, partial returns aren’t allowed — see Mercari bundles. To cancel an order before shipping instead, see Mercari cancel order. For when the money is released, see Mercari payout.
