Shopify discount code not working at checkout? Read the error, then check these
When a customer says “your discount code doesn’t work”, the exact message they saw tells you most of the answer. Ask for it — or reproduce it yourself — and match it below.
“Enter a valid discount code”
Shopify shows this when the code doesn’t exist or isn’t currently active. Check in Discounts:
- the code is spelled exactly as the customer typed it;
- it’s Active;
- today is between its start and end dates — a discount expires on the end date at the end time you set.
The code exists, but “isn’t valid for the items in your cart”
The code is real, but it doesn’t apply to the products in the cart. Check the discount’s settings:
- which products or collections it applies to;
- minimum purchase requirements (amount or quantity);
- customer eligibility, if it’s limited to certain customers.
For “buy X get Y” discounts, the customer needs the qualifying products in the cart before entering the code.
Codes that “couldn’t be used together”
When a customer enters several codes that can’t be combined, Shopify tells them and applies the best combination it can. If you want codes to stack, check each discount’s combinations settings — both discounts have to allow combining with each other’s type.
The code was “already used”
If a code can only be used once per customer, a customer who already used it can’t reuse it. An unfinished checkout can also keep a code on hold — the customer may have started a checkout earlier with the same code.
The discount field doesn’t appear at all
- Shop Pay: customers must log in to Shop Pay before the discount code field is shown.
- Apps: a third-party app that changes pricing or checkout can stop the discount code field from displaying, depending on how the app works. Test with recently added apps disabled to find the culprit.
Test discounts as a customer would before announcing them: a private browser window, the exact products the promotion is for, and the full checkout up to payment.
