Shopify store not showing on Google? Check these first
You launched your Shopify store, searched for it, and nothing. Usually Google simply hasn’t been able to see it yet. Work through these in order.
1. Is your store in private mode?
A store with a password page — private mode — is hidden from search engines. Shopify says a sitemap reader such as Google can’t access your sitemap while the store is in private mode, and the crawler can’t index a store it can’t reach.
Check your store’s password protection (restrict access) setting in your Shopify admin. If it’s on and you’ve launched, turn it off.
2. Verify your domain in Google Search Console
Search Console is Google’s free tool for seeing how your site appears in search. To use it:
- Create a Search Console account if you don’t have one, and add your domain.
- Verify it — Shopify’s help walks through adding Google’s verification tag to your theme. You need to turn off private mode to verify; if you aren’t ready to launch, you can turn it back on after verification.
- If Google shows an error when you click Verify, Shopify says to wait 15 minutes and try again.
3. Submit your sitemap
Every Shopify store generates a sitemap automatically at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml, with links to your products, collections, pages and blog posts. It updates itself when you add things.
In Search Console, go to Indexing → Sitemaps, enter sitemap.xml, and submit. If you use international domains, submit the sitemap for each one.
4. Then give it time
Google doesn’t guarantee how long crawling takes. To see whether your pages are indexed yet, search Google for site:yourdomain.com. For a specific page, use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console, which can also request indexing.
Still missing after weeks?
- Check individual pages. Products, pages and posts must be published to your Online Store to appear in search.
- Domain working? If it won’t load or shows SSL errors, see Shopify domain not working.
- One primary domain. If you have several domains, make sure they redirect to your primary domain.
- Being indexed isn’t ranking. If
site:shows your pages but you can’t find them for product searches, that’s about competition and content — see Shopify store getting traffic but no sales for the next step once visitors arrive.
