Shopify store getting traffic but no sales? Find the step where visitors leave
“Lots of sessions, zero sales” feels like one problem, but it’s really one of four: the traffic isn’t real buyers, visitors don’t add to cart, they add to cart but don’t start checkout, or they start checkout and don’t finish. Shopify shows you which one — so look before you redesign anything.
Step 1: is the store actually open?
New Shopify stores start in private mode, behind a password page. Until you launch the store (the access setting on the Online Store page changes from private to public), visitors can’t browse or buy — but you may still see sessions. If you’ve just started, check this first.
Then place a test order yourself, end to end, on your phone. A broken payment setup or a shipping zone that excludes your buyers’ country stops every sale.
Step 2: read the funnel
Shopify’s Conversion rate breakdown report shows how sessions move through four steps:
- Sessions
- Sessions with cart additions
- Sessions that reached checkout
- Sessions that completed checkout
Shopify defines conversion rate as sessions that completed checkout divided by all sessions. Find the step with the biggest drop — that’s where to work.
Two things to know when reading it:
- Some purchases skip the cart — for example accelerated checkout buttons or sales from other channels — so steps don’t always add up neatly.
- Shopify updated how it measures sessions between September 21 and 23, 2026, so session-based numbers like conversion rate may look different before and after that date. Compare periods on the same side of it.
If visitors don’t add to cart
They looked and weren’t convinced. Check, on a phone:
- Photos — enough angles, sizes and in-use shots to replace touching the product.
- Price and shipping — the total compared with where else they could buy it.
- Product page clarity — what it is, what’s included, sizes, delivery time, above the fold.
- Trust — contact details, a real About page, clear refund and shipping policies, reviews if you have them.
If they add to cart but don’t start checkout
Usually a surprise: shipping cost revealed late, a minimum order, or no way to see delivery time. Show shipping costs and delivery estimates before the cart.
If they reach checkout but don’t pay
Check payment methods available in your buyers’ countries, unexpected taxes or fees at the last step, and whether checkout works on mobile. Watch for errors in your own test order.
Is the traffic real?
Look at where sessions come from (referrer, location, device). A burst of sessions from one unfamiliar source, a country you don’t ship to, or visits that last a second and never add to cart usually isn’t buyers. Don’t judge your store on traffic that never wanted it.
Don’t change everything at once. Fix the step with the biggest drop, then give it a couple of weeks of data before moving to the next.
Getting found on Google too?
If most of your traffic is paid or social and Google barely shows your products, run our free Shopify SEO checker. If you run Google Shopping, a store that looks untrustworthy can also get your Merchant Center account suspended — see Merchant Center suspended for misrepresentation.

Checkout problems to rule out: discount codes not working, tax not being charged, and abandoned checkout emails not sending. Product titles: see Shopify title length.
