Shopify title length: product title vs. SEO title, and the 70/60 character rule

“Shopify title length” usually means one of two different things: the product title shown on your store, or the page title Google shows in search results. They’re related, but they have different jobs — and only one has a limit Shopify spells out.

Product title vs. page title

  • Product title: what you type in the product’s Title field. Shopify uses it for the page’s H1 heading, the big title on the product page.
  • Page title (SEO title): the clickable headline in Google’s results. Edit it under Search engine listing on the product. If you leave it blank, your theme builds one from the product title and your store name.

The limits Shopify gives

Guidance
Page title fieldUp to 70 characters
Shopify’s recommendation60 characters or fewer, so it isn’t cut off in search results
Meta descriptionAbout 160 characters recommended

Longer page titles and descriptions get shortened in search results — usually at a word break, but your key words may disappear.

How to write them

Product title — clear and descriptive for shoppers on your store: Linen Button-Down Shirt – Sage Green.

Page title — the words people search, product first, within 60 characters: Sage Green Linen Button-Down Shirt for Men | Northwind. If your store name is long, consider dropping it from the page title.

Meta description — one or two sentences that make someone click: material, the key benefit, delivery or returns.

Each page title should be unique. If several products share the same page title, Google has a harder time telling them apart.
