Shopify product and variant limits: 2,048 variants, 3 options, 250 images

Shopify doesn’t cap how many products you can sell — but it does cap what a single product can hold. These are the limits from Shopify’s pricing page and help center.

Products: unlimited

Shopify’s pricing page lists “Sell unlimited products” on every plan — Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus.

Per product

LimitMaximum
Variants per product2,048
Options per product (e.g. Size, Color, Material)3
Media items (such as images) per product250

Older guides and forum posts still say 100 variants — that was the old limit. Shopify’s help now says 2,048.

Need more than 3 options or 2,048 variants?

Shopify’s help suggests:

  • a third-party app from the Shopify App Store; or
  • customizing your theme to collect extra choices as line item properties (for example, a monogram text field instead of a variant per letter).

Shopify Plus stores can also use Combined Listings, which groups several products into one listing — each product keeping its own options, with up to three more options on top.

Often the simpler fix is to split the product: one product per color or material, linked from each other, rather than one product with thousands of combinations.

Daily variant limit for very large stores

If your store has 500,000 or more variants, you’re subject to a daily limit when uploading variants by app or CSV import: up to 10,000 new variants a day. Shopify Plus stores aren’t subject to this limit.
