Shopify product image size: what Shopify recommends
Shopify accepts almost any image, so the question isn’t what’s allowed — it’s what looks good in your theme. Here are Shopify’s own numbers, and the one setting that fixes an uneven product grid.
The numbers from Shopify
- Recommended: 2048 × 2048 pixels for square product images. Shopify says this usually displays best.
- Maximum: 5000 × 5000 pixels, or 25 megapixels.
- File size: smaller than 20 MB.
- Best formats: PNG, then JPEG. Shopify also accepts TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and WebP, including animated GIF and WebP.
You don’t need to make separate small versions. When you upload an image, Shopify automatically creates the sizes your theme needs.
Why your collection page looks uneven
If product images on a collection page show up at different sizes, it’s because they have different aspect ratios. Shopify’s fix: use one consistent aspect ratio for every product’s main (featured) image — for example, all square.
Practical tips
- Square 2048 × 2048 for most stores. Switch to a portrait ratio only if your theme is built for it (common in fashion) — and then use it for every product.
- Keep the product the same size in each photo, so the grid looks tidy.
- Compress before uploading. A 2048-pixel JPEG rarely needs to be more than a few hundred KB; big files slow your store on phones.
- Write alt text for each image. It helps shoppers using screen readers and image search.
Good images help, but slow pages and confusing checkouts lose sales too. See Shopify store getting traffic but no sales.
Each product can hold up to 250 media items — see Shopify product and variant limits.
