Etsy 1099-K: who gets one, how to download it, and why the total looks high
The 1099-K is the tax form Etsy sends to report your sales to the IRS. Whether you get one depends on how much you sold — and either way, your Etsy income still counts.
Who gets a 1099-K
Etsy’s help says you get a 1099-K if, in a calendar year, you have:
- $20,000 or more in gross sales, and
- 200 or more completed sales.
Only sales processed through Etsy Payments count toward these thresholds. Some states set their own, lower thresholds, so you may get a form even below the federal numbers.
This is the federal threshold again after a change in the law: the IRS confirms that the One, Big, Beautiful Bill retroactively reinstated the old rule — payment platforms must report when payments are over $20,000 and there are more than 200 transactions. The lower $600 threshold you may have read about no longer applies.
“Not eligible for a 1099-K” or didn’t get one
If you sold less than the thresholds, Etsy doesn’t have to send a form — that’s all it means. Your income is still taxable. The IRS is clear that you must report income whether or not you receive a 1099-K. Use your own records (see below) to work out what you earned.
How to download it
In Shop Manager → Finances → Legal and tax information, choose the tax year and select Download 1099-K. Etsy says the form is available by the end of January for the previous year. Make sure you pick the right year — a form from the wrong year has the wrong numbers.
Why the total is higher than what you earned
The 1099-K shows gross sales — the amount before Etsy’s fees, refunds and your shipping costs are taken out. It isn’t your profit. To check the number, Etsy suggests downloading your Etsy Payments CSV (Shop Manager → Settings → Options → Download Data) and adding up the Gross column. Fees, refunds and costs are things you deduct on your return.
Keep your taxpayer details up to date
Etsy says that if you don’t have valid taxpayer details on file and your sales go over $500 in a calendar year, your shop is suspended until you add them. If that’s happened, see Etsy shop suspended.
This explains the form Etsy sends, not your tax return. For what to report and deduct, ask a tax professional.
To see the fees that come out of each sale, use the Etsy fee calculator. For sales tax (a separate thing), see Etsy sales tax.
