Etsy shop suspended? Temporary vs. permanent, and how to get reinstated

A suspended shop disappears from search and sales stop, so it’s easy to assume the worst. But many suspensions are temporary and administrative, and they lift on their own once the missing step is done. The first job is to find out which kind you have.

Find the reason

Etsy says it suspends accounts when it has reason to believe its policies have been violated, when a shop has an overdue bill, or when a shop hasn’t submitted required information or completed steps needed for security or legal compliance.

Look in two places:

  1. Your email, including spam and promotions folders. Etsy usually emails the reason, and the email says whether the suspension is temporary or permanent.
  2. The Shop Manager dashboard, which may show a banner with the next step.

No email? Search your inbox for “Etsy” over the last few weeks — bank or tax verification requests are easy to miss — then contact Etsy Support from the Help Center.

Temporary suspensions: fix the missing step

These are the common administrative causes in Etsy’s help, and the fix for each:

  • Overdue bill. Pay the amount due in Shop Manager → Finances → Payment account. Etsy says paying should reinstate the account quickly and automatically.
  • Taxpayer ID (US sellers). Etsy asks US sellers for a taxpayer ID once they pass a sales threshold. Add it on the Legal and tax information page; the shop should be reinstated shortly after. See Etsy 1099-K for the threshold and the form Etsy sends.
  • Bank account verification. Once you start updating your bank account, there’s a time limit to finish verifying it. Completing it should restore the shop.
  • Identity verification. Complete the verification Etsy asked for, using the link in its email or Shop Manager. See Etsy identity verification for what it needs.

If the reason was something else, follow the specific instructions in Etsy’s message.

Permanent suspensions: appeal, once, with evidence

If the email says your account is permanently suspended and you have resolved the issues that led to it, you can appeal:

  • through the Appeals Center, within 6 months of the suspension date;
  • explaining what you’ve changed and how your practices will be different, with supporting documents;
  • a specialist reviews the appeal and your account history and replies by email — Etsy says this usually takes up to about two weeks.

An appeal doesn’t guarantee reinstatement, and Etsy treats an unsuccessful appeal as final. Write it carefully the first time: specific facts, what went wrong, what you fixed, and proof.

An appeal outline you can fill in:

Shop: [shop name]. Suspended on [date] for [reason in Etsy’s email].

What went wrong: [specific facts — e.g. 6 orders shipped late in March because I relied on one supplier who missed deliveries].

What I’ve changed: [actions with dates — e.g. added a second supplier on [date]; changed processing time from 1–3 to 3–5 days; refunded and contacted every affected buyer].

How my shop will work from now on: [ongoing practice — e.g. I check stock before accepting custom orders and review open orders every morning].

Attached: [documents — e.g. supplier invoices, refund confirmations, screenshots of updated listings].

Thank you for reviewing my appeal.

Don’t open a new shop to get around a suspension. It usually breaks Etsy’s terms, and the new account can be suspended too — which makes a legitimate appeal harder.

Orders that were already placed

Etsy has a help page on completing orders while a shop is closed or suspended. Read it straight away so existing buyers still receive their items.

After you’re reinstated

Listings may take a little while to show up in search again. If views stay low, check that listings are active and haven’t expired in the meantime — see Etsy views suddenly dropped.
