Why does Etsy auto-renew sold listings? The $0.20 renewal fees explained
Sellers are often surprised by a stream of $0.20 charges labeled “auto-renew sold” or “auto-renew expired”. They’re not errors — they’re how Etsy keeps listings live. Here’s when each one applies.
The two kinds of renewal fee
Etsy’s fee policy lists two automatic renewals, each $0.20 USD:
Auto-renew expired. Every listing lasts four months. If it’s set to renew automatically, Etsy renews it when it expires and charges $0.20 — whether or not it ever sells.
Auto-renew sold. If a listing has more than one item in stock and one sells, Etsy automatically renews the listing so the remaining quantity stays for sale, and charges the renewal fee. Etsy’s own example: a listing of ten bowls costs $0.20 to list; when all ten sell, you’ve paid an extra $1.80 — $0.20 for each additional item sold.
If several of the same item sell in one order, a fee applies for each additional quantity too.
Why it works this way
Each listing fee “buys” one listing for four months. When a multi-quantity listing sells, Etsy renews it so it stays live for the rest of your stock — which also resets its four-month clock. So the fee is effectively charged per item sold, not per listing.
How to change renewal settings
Renewal is set per listing. In the listing editor, find the renewal options and choose:
- Automatic — renews when it expires (and after sales, for multi-quantity listings);
- Manual — the listing expires after four months unless you renew it yourself.
New listings start set to automatic, so check this on listings you’d rather renew by hand.
When to keep auto-renew on
- Steady sellers: yes. A $0.20 renewal is cheap compared with a listing quietly expiring and dropping out of search.
- Slow movers: consider manual renewal. Each expiry becomes a moment to decide whether the listing still deserves a slot — see Etsy listing expired.
Also remember that renewals continue during vacation mode — see Etsy vacation mode.

Renewing a listing just for the small temporary boost new and renewed listings get isn’t an effective strategy, according to Etsy — the boost is short and the fees add up.
