Etsy vacation mode: message examples, and how to get your listings back
Vacation mode is the most common “all my listings vanished at once” cause on Etsy — and the easiest to fix. Here’s exactly what it does, how to undo it, and the two surprises sellers run into.
What vacation mode does
According to Etsy’s help:
- your listings are hidden from search and can’t be purchased;
- buyers can still visit your shop and message you, and see your vacation notice;
- direct links to your listings show an “Item unavailable” notice;
- vacation mode has no end date — it stays on until you turn it off.
Set an announcement and auto-reply
When you turn vacation mode on in Shop Manager → Settings → Options → Vacation Mode, Etsy lets you add two optional messages:
- a vacation announcement, shown on your shop page;
- a Messages auto-reply, sent to anyone who messages you while vacation mode is on.
Leave a field blank and that message isn’t used. The vacation auto-reply replaces any other auto-replies you’ve set up in Messages. Etsy counts auto-replies as responses, so they help your response rate while you’re away.

Open orders while you’re away
Vacation mode stops new sales; it doesn’t cancel orders already placed. Those still need to ship by their dates, so finish or ship them before you leave — or plan your break around your processing times. If you can’t fulfil one, cancel the order rather than leaving it open — late shipments can lead to buyer cases; see Etsy return policy and cases.
How to turn it off
In Shop Manager → Settings → Options → Vacation Mode, switch it off. Etsy says it can take up to ten minutes for all your listings to become visible again.
Then check Shop Manager → Listings: any listing that expired while you were away won’t come back on its own — see the next section.
Surprise 1: listings can expire — or renew and charge you
Being on vacation doesn’t pause the four-month listing clock:
- listings set to auto-renew that expire during vacation mode are renewed — and Etsy charges the $0.20 renewal fee;
- listings not set to auto-renew simply expire, and stay expired after you return.
Automatic renewal is the default for new listings, so check renewal settings before a long break. After you return, filter Listings by Expired and renew the ones you want back — see Etsy listing expired.
Surprise 2: sales are slow after coming back
It’s common for views to take a while to recover after a long break. Before changing titles and tags, make sure every listing is active, and see Etsy views suddenly dropped for what else to check.
“Etsy put my shop on vacation mode” — I didn’t
Etsy can turn on vacation mode itself because of an issue with your account. In that case Etsy says:
- you can’t switch it off yourself — you have to resolve the account issue first;
- you won’t be charged renewal fees for auto-renew listings while it’s on.
Check your email (including spam) and the Shop Manager dashboard for the reason, and follow Etsy’s steps. If it’s about billing, tax or verification, see Etsy shop suspended — the fixes are similar.
For a short break, vacation mode is simpler than deactivating listings one by one — but set a reminder to turn it off. Every day it’s on, your listings are invisible.
