Etsy return policy for sellers: “no returns”, cases, and why an order got refunded

Etsy doesn’t have one return policy for every shop — you set your own. But your policy only covers buyers who change their mind. When an order doesn’t arrive or isn’t as described, Etsy’s case process applies whatever your policy says.

Setting your return policy

  • Each seller sets their own refund, return and exchange policies.
  • You can set them per listing. Etsy lets you accept returns on some items and not others — for example, returns on ready-made items but not on personalized ones.
  • “No returns or exchanges” is a valid policy. It’s common for custom, personalized and made-to-order items.

You set policies in Shop Manager under your shop’s policies, then choose which policy applies when you edit each listing.

What “no returns” does — and doesn’t — cover

A no-returns policy means you don’t have to accept an item back because the buyer changed their mind or chose the wrong size.

It doesn’t stop a buyer from asking for help when something went wrong with the order. Under Etsy’s process:

  1. The buyer first contacts you with Help with Order.
  2. If you don’t reply within 48 hours, or can’t resolve it, they can open a case.
  3. Cases are for orders that didn’t arrive, arrived late (7 or more days after the latest estimated delivery date), arrived damaged or aren’t as described.

Etsy can resolve a case itself, including refunding the buyer and taking the money back from your Etsy Payments account.

Purchase Protection: when Etsy pays, not you

For eligible orders, Etsy’s Purchase Protection program covers the refund — up to $250, including shipping and tax, and since Etsy’s May 2026 update this applies even when the order total is higher than $250. You aren’t charged for the amount Etsy covers.

The program has eligibility requirements, and orders that don’t meet them are your responsibility to refund. Read the current program terms in the references below — Etsy has updated them more than once.

“Why was my Etsy order refunded?”

If you see an order marked refunded and you didn’t refund it, the usual reasons are:

  • Etsy resolved a case in the buyer’s favor (check the case under the order and your email).
  • The order was cancelled — a cancellation always means a full refund to the buyer. Etsy says it can take up to 48 hours to process. See how to cancel an Etsy order.
  • A Purchase Protection refund, where Etsy paid the buyer under the program.

If the buyer filed a chargeback with their bank instead, it goes through the bank’s process: you can’t refund on Etsy, and the buyer can’t open an Etsy case.

Avoiding cases in the first place

Reply to Help with Order messages within 48 hours, ship by your processing time with tracking, and describe items accurately — especially colors, sizes and what’s included. A clear “no returns” note in the listing for custom work prevents most change-of-mind requests.

If you sell to buyers in the EU or UK, consumer law gives them extra rights to cancel or return many purchases, regardless of your Etsy policy. Check Etsy’s help for your region before relying on “no returns”.
