Etsy categories and attributes: how to pick them so buyers can find you

Categories and attributes are the least exciting part of an Etsy listing, and the easiest to rush. But they work like extra tags you get for free — and if you skip them, your listing is invisible to every buyer who filters search.

How they work together

  1. You choose a category first. Etsy shows the attributes after you pick a category, and the category decides which attributes you can add.
  2. Categories act like tags. Etsy says the categories you choose work as tags. Your listing is also placed in all the parent categories above the one you pick — a kite listed under “Kites” also appears under “Toys & Games”.
  3. Attributes power search filters. When buyers filter by color, material, occasion and so on, only listings that have that attribute can show up in the filtered results.

Choosing a category

  • Pick the most specific category that fits. Etsy’s advice is to choose the most specific, accurate category available. A deeper category puts you in more places (every parent category too) and unlocks more category-specific attributes.
  • Check Etsy’s suggestions. Etsy suggests categories while you create a listing; take one only if it really describes your item.
  • Choose by what the item is, not how it’s delivered. Etsy asks separately whether a listing is a physical item or digital files, so a printable wall art download still belongs under art and prints, and a sticker sheet under stickers — not under some generic “digital” category.
  • Not sure? Search Etsy for items like yours, open a few of the best-selling ones, and look at the category path in their breadcrumbs.

Filling in attributes

  • Fill in every attribute that truly applies. Each one is another filter your listing can appear in.
  • Be accurate. Etsy warns against adding attributes that don’t apply — buyers who filter for something and get the wrong item lose trust in search.
  • No exact match? Choose the closest relevant option rather than leaving it blank.
  • Don’t see many attributes? Not every category has category-specific attributes yet; Etsy adds them over time. Check whether a more specific category gives you more.
  • Don’t spend tags repeating them. Etsy uses your category and attributes for search matching too, so your 13 tags go further on phrases they don’t cover — see Etsy tags.

After you change them

Changing categories or attributes on a listing that already sells is low risk if the new choice is more accurate. Change a few listings, wait a couple of weeks, and compare views before doing the whole shop. If views are already low, see Etsy listing getting no views.
