Etsy tags: how to use all 13 (and why some won’t save)

Tags are where most of an Etsy listing’s long-tail matching happens. Every listing gets 13 tags, and each tag can be up to 20 characters long. That’s not much room, so the difference between a listing that gets found and one that doesn’t is often just how those 13 slots are used.

The rules

  • 13 tags per listing. Use all of them — an empty slot is a search you can never match.
  • 20 characters per tag, spaces included. Anything longer simply won’t save.
  • Tags can be phrases. “mom birthday gift” is one tag, and it’s far more useful than three separate one-word tags.

Five mistakes that waste slots

1. Single words. A tag like gift or mug competes with millions of listings and says almost nothing about yours. Expand it into the phrase a shopper would type.

2. Phrases that are too long. “birthday gift for mom” is 21 characters, one too many. Rephrase rather than cut: “mom birthday gift” is 17.

3. Duplicates. The same phrase twice — or with different capitalization — uses two slots for one search.

4. Repeating your category. Etsy’s own guidance says your category and attributes are also used for matching. Tag slots go further on phrases those don’t already cover: style, recipient, occasion, use.

5. Brand and character names. Unless you’re licensed, trademarks in tags can get a listing flagged or removed. Describe the product instead — and if the design itself uses someone else’s characters or logos, changing the tags won’t fix it: the item still needs a license.

A simple way to fill all 13

Start from what the item is, then layer on the details a shopper might add:

  1. Product + material or type — leather wallet, ceramic planter
  2. Product + recipient — wallet for him, mom birthday gift
  3. Occasion — anniversary gift, graduation gift
  4. Style — minimalist jewelry, boho wall art
  5. Use or problem solved — travel jewelry case

Then check: does the core product term also appear in the title? Tags work best when they extend the title with phrases it has no room for, not when they describe a different product.

Test it like a shopper

After saving, wait a day, then search one of your exact tag phrases in a private browser window while logged out. Etsy search is personalized, so searching from your own account isn’t a reliable test.
