Etsy listing deactivated or removed? Find the reason, then fix or appeal
“Inactive”, “deactivated” and “removed by Etsy” look similar in Shop Manager, but they have different causes and different fixes. Find out which one you have before you change or relist anything.
Step 1: is it really a removal?
Etsy’s help lists several reasons a listing goes inactive that have nothing to do with a policy problem:
- It expired. Listings last four months. If it didn’t sell and auto-renew was off, it expires. See Etsy listing expired.
- It sold out. A listing with no quantity left stops showing.
- You (or someone with access) deactivated it. These sit under the Inactive filter in Shop Manager → Listings.
If it’s one of these, renew or reactivate it — no appeal needed.
Step 2: is it the shop, not the listing?
If many listings went inactive at once, Etsy’s help says the problem may be with your shop rather than the listings. Check your email, including spam, for a message from Etsy, and look for a banner in Shop Manager. Billing, tax or verification issues can suspend a shop; see Etsy shop suspended.
Step 3: find the reason Etsy gave
Etsy may remove listings that break its Creativity Standards, Prohibited Items Policy, Sanctions Policy or Intellectual Property Policy. The reason appears in:
- the removal email; and
- Shop Manager → Policy violations.
Read it before doing anything else. The fix depends entirely on which policy is named.
Step 4: fix it, or appeal if it was a mistake
Intellectual property report. When a rights holder reports a listing, Etsy deactivates it and sends an IP infringement notice. Etsy directs questions about the claim to the party that filed the report — it can’t speak for the rights owner. If your item uses someone else’s brand, characters or logos without permission, removing words from the title isn’t enough: the item itself needs a license. Repeated reports can put the whole shop at risk.
Mature content. Etsy’s guidance is that the quickest fix is usually to create a new listing for the item that meets the mature content guidelines.
Other policies. If you believe the removal was a mistake, you may be able to appeal from the Policy violations page. According to Etsy’s help:
- appeals are available only for certain policies, such as Creativity Standards and Intellectual Property;
- you have 180 days from the removal to appeal;
- if an appeal is denied, you can’t appeal again for the same listing.
Don’t simply relist a removed item unchanged. If the reason still applies, it will be removed again — and repeated violations can lead to restrictions on your shop.
If the reason isn’t clear
Use the reply or “I still need help” option in Etsy’s notification email, or contact Etsy Support from the Help Center. Keep your message short: which listing, what the notice said, and what you’ve already checked.
