Etsy title character limit: 140 allowed, but shorter titles work better
Etsy lets you write up to 140 characters in a listing title. That’s the hard limit. But Etsy’s own guidance has moved firmly toward shorter titles, and there are good reasons to follow it.
The numbers
| Limit or guidance | |
|---|---|
| Maximum title length | 140 characters |
| Etsy’s recommendation | Fewer than 15 words, describing what makes the item special |
| Etsy’s ad-readiness checklist | Succinct — ideally 40 characters or less, leading with the most relevant keywords |
| Shown in Google results | Roughly the first 50–60 characters |
Why shorter titles win
- Shoppers see the start. In search results — especially on phones — only the beginning of the title is visible. If it opens with “Gift for her, birthday present, mom gift…”, the shopper doesn’t see what the item is.
- Google sees the start. Your listing title becomes the page title, and Google shows about 50–60 characters.
- Keyword stuffing doesn’t help. Etsy matches searches against your title, tags, categories and attributes. Repeating phrases in the title doesn’t add matches your tags and attributes can’t cover. See the Etsy tags guide.
Etsy’s search experts have said title word order doesn’t directly change ranking — but putting the most relevant words first makes the listing clearer and helps clicks.
A simple structure
What it is + the one or two details that matter most (material, size, personalization) — and stop.
- Weak (130+ characters):
Personalized Necklace Gift for Her Mom Birthday Gift Christmas Gift Name Necklace Gold Necklace Custom Jewelry Bridesmaid Gift - Better (40 characters):
Gold Name Necklace, Personalized Jewelry
Put occasions and recipients — birthday, bridesmaid, Christmas — in your tags, where they don’t crowd the title.
Changing a title doesn’t change the listing’s URL, and search can take up to a day to pick up edits. Change titles one listing at a time and give each a few days before judging.
