Etsy listing photo size: pixels, ratio and thumbnail crops
Etsy doesn’t reject a photo for being the “wrong” size — but size still matters. Your first photo affects where the listing shows up in search, and thumbnails get cropped differently in different places. Here’s what Etsy’s help actually says, and a size that works everywhere.
The numbers from Etsy
- Recommended size: at least 2000 pixels on both width and height. Big photos stay sharp when buyers zoom.
- First photo: at least 635 pixels wide and tall. Etsy says a smaller first photo can make the listing show up lower in search.
- Up to 20 photos per listing.
- File size: Etsy notes that images over 1 MB may fail to upload on slower connections.
Ratio and thumbnails
Etsy doesn’t require one fixed ratio. Instead, its help explains that the same photo is cropped into square, portrait and landscape thumbnails in different parts of the site, and that your first photo should be landscape or square.
So the safe approach is:
- Shoot your first photo landscape or square.
- Keep the product in the middle with empty space around it, so no crop cuts it off.
- After uploading, use the thumbnail adjustment in the listing editor to check the crop.
A size that fits all of this, as a practical choice: 2000 × 2000 for square, or 2500 × 2000 for landscape. If you design in Canva or similar, set the canvas to one of these.
Why your photos look blurry
- The original is small. A photo under 2000 pixels gets stretched when buyers zoom. Export at full resolution, not a screenshot or a “small” export.
- Heavy compression. If you shrank the file to get under 1 MB, try a higher quality setting and accept a slightly bigger file — 1 MB is about slow uploads, not a hard limit in the help.
- Text in the image. Small text gets fuzzy in thumbnails. Keep text large, or put it in the description.
If photos won’t upload
Try a smaller file (re-export as JPG), a different browser, or a faster connection. Etsy’s note about large files failing on slow connections is the most common cause.
Photos are part of why a listing gets clicked at all. If yours gets few views, see Etsy listing getting no views; if it gets views but no sales, see Etsy views but no sales.
