eBay seller account restricted or suspended? Find the reason and fix it

A restricted eBay account can mean very different things: a fee you forgot to pay, a document eBay wants, or a policy problem. The fix depends entirely on which — and eBay tells you, if you know where to look.

Restricted, suspended, or just limited?

  • Restricted: some activity is blocked. eBay says if your account is restricted only for selling, you can still buy — and vice versa.
  • Suspended: a suspended account can’t bid, buy or sell.
  • Selling limits: not a restriction at all. Every selling account has monthly limits based on its performance and the items it lists; new sellers start with lower ones. Check them in Seller Hub → Overview.

Why eBay restricts accounts

eBay lists these reasons:

  • you have eBay fees to pay;
  • you need to reimburse eBay for a refund it made to a buyer;
  • you’ve violated an eBay rule or policy;
  • eBay couldn’t verify your account information;
  • you need to update your payment method.

The specific reason is in My eBay → Messages and your email. Read that first.

How to fix each one

Unpaid fees or a refund reimbursement. Make a one-time payment: in My eBay, go to Account and choose One-time payment next to your payment method for seller fees.

Verification. eBay sometimes asks you to provide or confirm personal information. The documents it needs, and where to upload them, are in your Messages.

Payment method. Update your payment and bank details so they’re current and correct.

Policy violation. Follow the steps in eBay’s message exactly. eBay says a first violation usually isn’t indefinite, but repeated violations after a warning or temporary restriction can lead to an indefinite suspension. If listings were removed, don’t list those items again unless you’ve changed them the way eBay asked — see eBay listing removed.

While you wait

  • Keep shipping existing orders on time with tracking and answering buyers — open cases and late shipments make things worse.
  • Check your seller level in Seller Hub → Performance; poor performance also tightens limits. See eBay sales dropped.

Don’t open a new eBay account to get around a restriction. eBay says that isn’t the way back and that it keeps account information for fraud protection. Resolve the original account first.

If eBay is asking for ID, bank or tax details, see eBay seller verification.
