eBay listing removed or taken down? Find out why before you relist
When eBay takes a listing down, the tempting move is to relist it straight away. eBay specifically warns against that. First find out which of the reasons applies — the right next step depends on it.
Why eBay removes or hides listings
eBay’s help lists these reasons:
- the listing doesn’t follow an eBay policy — for example prohibited or restricted items, counterfeits, or listing practices like keyword spam;
- the listing doesn’t follow a law;
- the rights owner asked for it to be removed — usually through eBay’s Verified Rights Owner (VeRO) program;
- the listing has been active for a year or more without any sales.
The notice is sent to Messages in My eBay and to your email. Read it carefully: it names the policy, and that tells you what has to change.
Don’t relist until you know why
eBay advises not relisting a removed item until you know exactly why it was removed, because relisting can lead to your account being suspended and, in some cases, legal action. That’s also why the Relist option isn’t available for some removed listings.
Fees for a listing removed for a policy reason aren’t automatically refunded; eBay says it depends on the listing and your history of following its policies.
What to do for each reason
A policy issue. Fix the specific problem the notice names. Common examples:
- Keyword spam — other brands in your title to catch their searches (“like Gucci”, “not Coach”). Remove them and describe your item.
- Prohibited or restricted items — check eBay’s policy for that category; some items can’t be listed at all, however they’re worded.
- Counterfeit or replica items — if the item imitates a brand, it can’t be sold on eBay. Removing the brand name doesn’t change what the item is.
A rights owner report (VeRO). eBay says that if a rights owner requested the removal, you should contact them before relisting. The notice tells you who reported it. If you believe the report is wrong — for example, the item is genuine — explain that to the rights owner with evidence such as receipts.
A year without sales. Nothing was wrong with the listing’s rules, but it wasn’t selling. Before listing it again, review the price against recently sold items, the title, item specifics and photos.
If you think eBay made a mistake, contact eBay customer service from the Help pages with the item number and the notice, and ask what needs to change. Get a clear answer before relisting — repeated violations can lead to account restrictions.
