eBay sales dropped off a cliff? Find the step where buyers disappeared
“My eBay sales dropped off a cliff” can mean very different things. Maybe your listings stopped being shown, maybe they’re shown but nobody clicks, or maybe people click and don’t buy. Seller Hub can tell you which — and that decides what to fix.
Step 1: open the Traffic report
In Seller Hub → Performance → Traffic, compare the last few weeks with the same period before the drop. eBay breaks traffic into:
- Impressions — how often your listings were shown, split into organic and promoted, and by placement (top of search, rest of search, outside search);
- Click-through rate — page views from eBay divided by impressions;
- Page views and sales conversion.
Then follow the number that fell.
If impressions fell: you’re being shown less
This is a visibility problem. Check, in order:
- Seller level. eBay says listings from Below Standard sellers may be placed lower in Best Match, alongside other limits such as reduced selling limits. Check Seller Hub → Performance: transaction defect rate, cases closed without seller resolution, late shipments. Levels are evaluated monthly.
- Listings that left search. Ended listings, quantity 0 with the out-of-stock option on, and removed or hidden listings all stop getting impressions. eBay can also remove or hide listings that have been active a year or more without a sale.
- Policy notices. Check Messages and your email for notices about removed listings or your account.
- Fewer active listings. If you list less than you used to, total impressions fall with it.
If none of these changed, compare with last year: many categories are seasonal, and a drop that matches last year’s pattern isn’t a problem with your account.
If impressions held but clicks fell: you’re losing the search page
Buyers see your listing next to others and pick someone else. On the search results page they mostly see the first photo, the title, the price and shipping. Check what competitors now charge in total, whether your main photo is clear at thumbnail size, and whether your title still leads with what buyers search.
If clicks held but sales fell: you’re losing on the listing page
Buyers open the listing and leave. Look at the total price against recently sold listings, handling time, return policy, item specifics and photos of flaws. eBay counts listing terms like returns and handling time among the Best Match factors too, so improving them helps twice.
Don’t end and relist everything at once hoping for a reset. It wipes the sales history on those listings and makes it impossible to tell what was actually wrong.
A quick self-check
Our free eBay listing visibility checker runs through status, duplicates, seller level, title, item specifics, photos and terms in order. If listings aren’t being shown at all, see eBay listing getting no views; if some were taken down, see eBay listing removed.
