eBay photo size, picture and video requirements
Your first photo is the one buyers see in search results, so it does more selling than anything else in the listing. Here’s what eBay requires, what it recommends, and the rules that get photos — or listings — removed.
Size
- Minimum: 500 pixels on the longest side. Smaller photos get blurry when enlarged.
- Recommended: about 1600 pixels. eBay’s help recommends images around 1600 × 1600.
- Ratio: eBay says 1:1 (square) or 16:9 photos look best in listings and search results.
A practical choice: 1600 × 1600 pixels, square, JPEG.
Number, formats and file size
- Up to 24 photos per listing in most categories.
- The first photo is your main photo, shown in search results.
- Formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, WEBP, HEIC or AVIF.
- File size: eBay’s pages give 7 MB per photo for uploads (12 MB when copying from a web address), while its main help page says 12 MB. Keep each file under 7 MB and you’re safe either way.
Rules that get photos rejected
- No added borders. A natural edge, like a square item against a plain backdrop, is fine.
- No added text, artwork or marketing messages on the photo.
- No stock photos as the main photo for pre-owned items. Catalog images are OK, but not as the primary photo for used items — except in Books, Movies, Music and Video Games.
Listing videos
You can also add a video to a listing:
- Format: MP4 or MOV, up to 150 MB.
- Resolution: uploads up to 1080p; eBay shows videos at 240p–720p.
- Length: ideally one minute or less.
- Where: use the Add video button in the new listing tool (if you don’t see it, you’re in the classic view). You can reuse one uploaded video on several listings.
- Not supported: listings with variations, and links to YouTube or other video sites.
- Review: videos are reviewed and posted within 48 hours, or up to seven business days at peak times. They appear in second position in the gallery and can’t be moved.
Videos follow the same listing policies as photos, and must be in the language of the eBay site you list on.
If photos won’t upload
Check the format is one of those above and the file is under 7 MB, then try an up-to-date browser and clear its cache. eBay also has a built-in editor (the pencil icon on a photo) to crop, rotate, sharpen and remove the background.
Better photos get more clicks from search. If your listings get few views, see eBay listing getting no views.
