eBay item specifics: fixing “missing required item specifics” and listings that won’t post

If eBay won’t let you list or revise an item, the most common reason is a missing item specific — brand, size, color, type and so on. eBay requires them because buyers filter search results by them, and your listing only shows up in a filtered search if it has the matching specific.

The three labels

When you list, eBay marks item specifics as:

  • Required — you must fill these in for any new or revised listing. If one is missing, you can’t list the item; the missing fields are marked in red.
  • Required Soon — eBay periodically makes more specifics required, based on what buyers search. Hover over the note to see when it becomes required.
  • Recommended — not mandatory, but they help buyers find and understand your item.

eBay also shows which specifics buyers search for most (over the past 30 days) as you list. Fill those in first.

Fix one listing

Open the listing, find the fields marked in red, fill them in, and submit again. Fill them in accurately — specifics are what buyers filter on, so a wrong value hides your item from the right buyers.

Fix many listings at once

  • Seller Hub task: on the Overview page, a task appears when listings are missing required item specifics. Click it to go straight to those listings.
  • Quick Filters: on Active Listings, filters show listings missing Required, Required Soon or Recommended specifics.
  • Add item specifics: select several listings on Active Listings and click Add item specifics to cycle through them in one pop-up.
  • Download/Upload file: download an Excel file of every active listing missing specifics, fill it in following the instructions, and upload it to apply the changes in bulk.

“This attribute is not valid for this variation”

For listings with variations (sizes, colors), eBay has made some variation details invalid. When you edit an affected listing you’ll see: “This attribute is not valid for this variation. Add a valid attribute.” Choose an existing variation detail that better describes how the items differ — or, if they aren’t closely related, list them separately.

Why it’s worth doing even when you can list

Item specifics are one of the most important ways eBay matches your item to searches, including on Google Shopping and other search engines. Listings with missing specifics are invisible to buyers who filter — see eBay listing getting no views.
