eBay funds on hold? Why payouts are held and how to get them released

Seeing money from a sale marked On hold in eBay is frustrating, especially on a new account. Holds are common and usually temporary — and Seller Hub tells you why and roughly when they end.

Where to look

Open Seller Hub → Payments. Held funds aren’t available for payout yet; eBay shows the status and, where possible, an estimated release date, along with guidance on anything you need to resolve.

Why eBay holds funds

From eBay’s help:

  • To make sure an order completes. Funds from specific orders may be held after the buyer has paid, while eBay makes sure the transaction is completed successfully.
  • An open case or dispute. If a buyer opens a case or a payment dispute, eBay may hold the amount of that order until it’s resolved.
  • Account checks. Funds can be held while eBay confirms information about your account — for example identity or bank details.

What helps release funds sooner

  • Upload tracking for every order, and ship on time. Order-level holds are typically tied to the sale completing successfully, and tracking that shows delivery is the clearest proof.
  • Resolve cases quickly — respond to buyers, offer a fix, and close the case.
  • Finish any requested verification shown in Seller Hub or your Messages.

If the estimated release date has passed, or there’s no explanation at all, contact eBay customer service.

A change for US private sellers

eBay’s help says it’s introducing an eBay balance for eligible US private sellers from November 4, 2026. Under that change, payouts are on-demand by default: your earnings stay in your balance until you use or withdraw them. If your money “isn’t arriving” after that date, check whether it’s simply waiting in your balance.

eBay never asks you to pay anyone, or move a sale off eBay, to release held funds. Messages claiming otherwise are scams.

Payouts are also held until your identity, bank account and tax ID are verified — see eBay seller verification.

For normal payout timing when nothing is on hold, see eBay payout schedule.
