Merchant Center “Product page unavailable”: causes and fixes
If Google can’t open the product page your listing links to, it disables the product: it stops showing in ads and free listings until Google can reach the page again. Merchant Center calls this “Product page unavailable” (you may also see “Unavailable desktop landing page”). Here’s how to find and fix the cause.
What each crawl error means
Google crawls the URL in your link [link] attribute (or link template [link_template] or mobile link [mobile_link]). Common errors:
| Error | What it means | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Page not found (404) | The page isn’t on your server | Submit a working product URL |
| Too many redirects | The URL redirects too often | No more than 2 redirects |
| Couldn’t connect / HTTP 5xx | Your server couldn’t handle the request | Make sure your site is always available |
| Can’t access robots.txt | Google couldn’t reach your robots.txt, so it couldn’t check the page | Make robots.txt reachable |
| Hostname not resolvable | Google couldn’t look up your domain | Check your DNS settings |
| URL protocol | The URL is malformed | Start with http:// or https://, use your verified domain, and URL-encode symbols (a comma becomes %2C) |
The Crawl error column on the issue page tells you which one applies to each product.
Test the page like Google does
Use Google’s URL Inspection Tool (in Search Console) and choose desktop or smartphone as the fetch type, depending on which error you got. If Google can’t fetch the page, the problem is your site; if it can, the problem is probably the link in your product data.
Common real-world causes worth checking:
- a product that was deleted or had its URL changed in your store while the feed still has the old link;
- a password page, maintenance mode or country redirect that blocks Google;
- a firewall or bot protection that blocks Googlebot.
Fix the links
One product: Products & store → Products → Needs attention → filter for the issue → select the product → Edit product → enter a URL Google can access → Save.
Many products: on Needs attention, filter and download the affected list (.csv), check each product’s link (desktop) and mobile link (mobile), correct them in your product data, and re-upload.
If your feed comes from Shopify or WooCommerce, fix the product in the store and let it sync.
Get re-checked faster
After fixing, request a website check — otherwise Google re-reviews automatically later:
- from the product: Products → All products → select the product → Product details tab → Needs attention → Request website check; or
- from Needs attention: find Product page unavailable → View fix → Request website check. If you can’t see it, turn off Prioritized fixes and select Show all fixes.
Google may take up to 12 hours, and you can’t send another request meanwhile. Errors should clear within a couple of days, then the products show again.
Planning site maintenance?
To avoid disapprovals during a planned outage, Google suggests:
- Disable automatic item updates at least 24 hours before the pages go down.
- Use the excluded destination [excluded_destination] attribute (or pause your campaigns) to stop showing the products.
- Afterwards, reset those settings and re-upload your data.
Products excluded from all destinations for more than 7 days are deleted automatically. If a product was still disapproved, Google generally recrawls within a day, or you can request a website check.
