How to dispute a Walmart return, refund or referral fee charge

Walmart sometimes refunds a customer on your behalf — and you don’t always agree. You can dispute some of those charges, but only once per item, and only in certain cases. Here’s how, from Walmart’s dispute standards.

What you can dispute, and where

ReasonWhere to file
Customer return or refund through Walmart’s Returns Shipping Service or Walmart Customer CareReturns dashboard in Seller Center
Failed delivery returned to senderPayments dashboard
Wrong referral feeHelp in the Seller Center menu bar → contact Support

Pick the right dispute type — the wrong one can delay the review and hurt the outcome. Each type has its own time window, so file promptly.

When you can’t dispute

  • You started the return or refund yourself.
  • The item has Keep It Rules.
  • It was returned through the Extended Returns program (you aren’t charged for those).
  • It was returned in store and not shipped within 12 days — it’s “lost in store”, and you aren’t charged.
  • Your return center address was invalid, so the package went to a Walmart facility — those charges are yours.
  • Return shipping fees charged outside the return exemption rules.
  • Refunds or cancellations Walmart made because you didn’t reply within 48 hours — see Walmart Customer Care Policy.

Keep the explanation short and factual — for example:

Purchase order [number], item [SKU]. I’m disputing the [return / refund] charge of [$amount] from [date]. [Specific reason — e.g. the returned item arrived used and missing parts (photos attached) / the item was delivered on [date] according to tracking [number]]. Attached: [photos, tracking, order details]. Please review and reimburse. Thank you.

The rules

  • One dispute per item. A second request is treated as an appeal of the first.
  • Give accurate information. Walmart can warn, suspend or terminate sellers who submit false or misleading disputes.

After you file

  • Decisions usually come in 24–48 hours, by email or on the Disputes dashboard — longer if more information is needed.
  • If approved, you’re reimbursed within one to two payment cycles (up to 30 days), shown in your Payments Report. An approved dispute is full and final settlement.
  • If the money doesn’t show up, contact Support with the original dispute case number.
  • If you disagree, Walmart has a separate process to appeal a dispute decision.

For the return rules behind most disputes, see Walmart return policy for sellers. For when reimbursements land, see Walmart payout schedule.
