Walmart Customer Care Policy: the 48-hour reply rule and what’s banned

Slow replies cost Walmart sellers more than on most marketplaces: miss the deadline and Walmart can cancel or refund the order for you — and you can’t dispute it. Here’s the policy.

The deadlines

  • Customer or Walmart Customer Care inquiries (email, phone or Seller Center Inbox): a high-quality reply within 48 hours — including weekends, Additional Days Off and operational outages.
  • Better Business Bureau or Attorney General complaints: within the first hour.

Your Seller Response Rate — inquiries answered within 48 hours — must stay above 95%. See Walmart Seller Performance Standards.

If you miss 48 hours

Walmart can:

  • cancel orders that haven’t shipped;
  • refund shipped orders;
  • impose category restrictions or suspend your account.

Cancellations or refunds caused by not responding can’t be disputed.

Auto-replies

Allowed only if they include a clear resolution timeline. Walmart’s own example:

Thank you for reaching out about your item refund. We’ll process the refund within 48 hours.

Not allowed:

  • “This inbox is not monitored, we’ll get back to you soon”;
  • replies that need several follow-ups or redirect the customer without a timeline;
  • misleading or overpromising answers.

A toll-free number is fine, but it can’t be your only contact method.

Required

  • Support in English for US orders.
  • Voicemail when no one can answer, and a greeting before any phone queue.
  • Tell customers if calls are recorded or monitored.
  • Present yourself as separate from Walmart.com, with accurate contact details.
  • Check your spam folder and whitelist Walmart’s addresses.

Not allowed

  • Marketing material or links to websites other than Walmart.com.
  • Contacting customers first by phone or anything other than the Seller Center Inbox (you can help if they call you), and unsolicited texts, emails or calls.
  • Google Voice or other internet phone services, or private residential numbers, as your support line.
  • “Walmart” in your customer service email address.
  • Haggling to avoid a return or refund — see Walmart return policy for sellers.
  • Revealing a gift recipient’s address.
  • Abusive or threatening language.

You don’t need to send order status updates — Walmart emails customers at every stage. If you can’t cancel or refund an order, you still have to reply and explain why.
